  • ANNOUNCEMENTS

I am currently not booking anymore new sessions for 2010.

Thank you for visiting my blog. This is a place where you will be able to find my latest photography work and client sneak peeks. I absolutely love the art of photography and consider it a blessing to have the opportunity to photograph so many wonderful people. I am so grateful to all of my clients for their support of my business to this point. Right now I am slowing down my client sessions in order to spend more time with my family. I will still be posting as I have the time to do limited sessions and as I reconnect with photography as a hobby for me. Thanks so much for your interest and time viewing my work!

It’s a Bus, Love

We just got back from a week vacation in Santa Cruz and while on vacation I made an attempt to leave the big camera behind most days and just use the point and shoot in order to enjoy the family time, rather than trying to capture “good” images. Well, after a week of driving by this very cool VW bus, I decided one little mini photo session was acceptable. The kids agreed to 30 minutes with gummy bears as their reward for doing a good job, Raider included. The “bus” was located just down the street from where we were staying and on the last day of our vacation I got the courage to ask it’s owner if I could have a little mini session on his property. He was out front every day working on his motorcycles and when I approached him and asked him if I could take pictures of my kids in front of his van he quickly corrected me, “It’s a bus, love.” We proceeded to chat about how my Dad owned a VW “bus” half of my life and many of my favorite childhood memories were with that bus. He was more than happy to let us use it for our photos and I was so excited!!! The kids did a great job and there were so many cool angles I could have shot for 2 hours, but we kept it to just 30 minutes.:)

Haylie starts kindergarten next week. I had brought along her first day of school outfit and a hat, hoping I could maybe catch a few pics of her on the beach to commemorate her big day – I’m pretty happy with the outcome of these:

The kids had Thomas tattoos all over them, which I painstakingly removed from all the photos, but I left this one on James for fun. I think this is Haylie’s “signature pose:”

Do you Photoshop?

I have been asked a lot of questions about Photoshop lately and specifically what the difference looks like between an image SOOC (straight out of the camera) vs. once I am done with it in Photoshop. I definitely do use Photoshop and honestly I don’t know many photographers these days that don’t use it or some other editing tool for sharpening, color adjustments, etc. My recent pictures of my “skater kids” prompted the most questions, I’m guessing because I really did more editing / color saturation than normal in order to achieve the look I really wanted for those pictures.

So I thought I would post a before and after shot so you could see the difference between what the image looks like when it comes out of my camera and once I am done editing it. I know when I was first getting into photography I was hungry to learn any detail I possibly could. There were a couple photographers who were really great and took the time to answer questions and steer me in the right direction. I am really grateful to them and because of their willingness to “Pay It Forward” I want to be able to help others feel more confident taking pictures as well. So… here they are.

SOOC – I shoot in RAW but this is ZERO editing – no sharpening or color adjustment done to it – I just converted the RAW file to JPEG so I could post it.

RAW edited – this file was opened in Camera Raw and I brightened the exposure a little, then darkened the blacks. I believe I also warmed it up just a little bit. Just doing the RAW adjustments makes the colors stand out more and gives a little more depth to the picture. I always shoot in RAW and can never go back to shooting in JPEG. There are no other photoshop edits or sharpening done yet on this image. Just saved it out of RAW and uploaded it.

Here is the final image after editing in Photoshop. I don’t claim to be the best at Photoshop and most certainly everyone has their own style of editing. I learn something new every day! Sometimes I even open a picture the next day and change the processing a little because I realized it was too dark or too cool, or too saturated.

Hopefully this is helpful for those who are learning like me to get an idea of the difference between what comes out of the camera and what Photoshop can help achieve. Let me know if something was confusing and I will try to help.

christina harrison - Great post, Sandy! I agree that RAW is the best!

Nakia - I love your final edit. What an absolutely adorable photo! :)

Skater Kids

For his birthday, Raider really wanted a long-board (aka a “long” skate board for those who aren’t familiar like me). James took to it immediately  and sneaks it away every chance he gets, rolling around the house and trying to ride just like Raider. Ever since I saw him playing on the long-board, I have been wanting to find some time to do a little session with it.  This week I finally caught a spare hour and decided to bring along the whole gang. We found a great back-alley downtown and set up our little photo session:

Grandma bought James this adorable hat several months ago. She said she saw it and thought it would be perfect for a photo session. I couldn’t agree more. Thanks Grandma!!!

Whenever the boys aren’t paying attention, Haylie likes to sneak a little time with the long-board too:

…and Mr. Skater Boy himself:

I’ve also really been wanting to use these cool glasses that we got at the movie theater when we saw Toy Story 3 in 3D. Aren’t they so funny on James?:)

Raider got himself a pair too!

Raider is such a good big brother, he often helps James skate like a big boy… and this was Haylie’s pose all on her own – I was snapping pics of Raider when Haylie jumped on the board and said look how cute I look Mom – that’s my little model girl:)

I love finding the time for fun shoots and new pics of the kids!:)

Mindy - Such an adorable family!

Aimee - Oh my gosh…those are WAY cute! That first image made me laugh, he’s adorable!

Miss Madeline

I absolutely love photographing Madeline. Between the gorgeous curls, the most adorable clothes and a spunk and personality to rival any 3 year old I know, Madeline’s images are sure to be adorable. You wouldn’t know it by all these pictures that she really has no desire to have her picture taken, but I consider us good buds now after our last few photos sessions so we’ve got a system. And I’m pretty sure I love her serious faces just as much as her smiling faces:

Sporting her favorite Paris  shirt since she went to Paris last summer:

LOVE this:

Despite her pretty, girly, exterior, Madeline isn’t afraid to get dirty and in fact she really likes to play with bugs. We stopped several times to check out the rolly-polly bugs in the garden:

Until next time beautiful Miss Madeline!!

~april - only one word: a-d-o-r-a-b-l-e!

christina harrison - Gorgeous images, Sandy! What a precious and stylish little girl.

Erin - Once again you have amazed me! Gorgeous pictures! Thanks for being so wonderful with Madeline. She adores you.
