Knowing When To Give Up

Never Give Up – it’s a great motto and something I often tell my 17-year-old who’s all too ready to throw in the towel some days; however this weekend I was reminded, sometimes you have to know when to stop and change directions. My session on Friday evening began a little crazy and although I’m sure I should have jumped ship on my original location choice much sooner, I’m glad we finally made the decision to chalk that place up to a loss and move on!!

About 3 or 4 weeks ago I had scoped out a cute location where I wanted to do an upcoming client’s family session. My kids and I had gone walking through this nature trail near our house and it was so lovely I knew I would come back soon to take pictures there. It was a breezy evening and we had a fun time climbing on the boulders and running through the tall, wheat-like grass. However, little did I know it would all change so much in just a few short weeks – I guess the 100 degree weather can do that! When I ventured out to that nature trail this weekend for a nice family photo session, all the light, breezy grass had turned into dried, crunchy, poky, cactus-like weapons.

We ventured off the trail into the nature area and although it seemed much more dry than I remembered, I thought for sure it wouldn’t be that bad. By the time we got out to the middle, I was starting to re-think my nice plan. We made an attempt to get some pictures in the blazing sun and then headed over to the shade to get a family picture among the large boulders. By the time we got to the shade and were covered with little “burrs” (spiky cactus balls that were stuck to our clothes), it was clear we needed to move on. We captured a few shots, tried to make it a tiny bit further and then retreated. By the time we made it back to the path there were practically more “burrs” showing on my shorts than denim! I tried brushing them off and ended up with a thousand tiny little spikes in my hands and feet. Ugh! At that point we knew it was senseless to continue down the path and opted for a safer, greener location in the nearby park. Needless to say the perfectionist in me about died and I felt terrible and almost a little off-kilter as I tried to recover the session. Thankfully everything else went much better, we got lots of great images and I had such a fun time running around the cactus-free park with Jaden capturing photos of this very patient family!!! I share this story for all those other perfectionists out there who are probably wriggling in their seats along with me!! I now know to check my locations the day before a session to confirm everything is still the same!!!:)Without further ado – here is Mr. Jaden and his fun family:
